OYO No Longer Welcome Unmarried Couples – Changes in check-in Rules

Under OYO’s revised policy, unmarried couples are required to present valid proof of relationship during check-in, even for online bookings.

New Delhi: Leading hospitality company OYO has introduced a new check-in policy, starting with its partner hotels in Meerut. Under this revised policy, unmarried couples will no longer be allowed to check in. Only married couples will be permitted to book rooms. As part of this update, all couples will be required to provide valid proof of their relationship during check-in, including for bookings made online.

The company stated that OYO has granted its partner hotels the discretion to decline bookings from unmarried couples, aligning with local social sensitivities. OYO has instructed its partner hotels in Meerut to implement this policy with immediate effect. Sources familiar with the policy changes revealed that, based on ground-level feedback, the company may expand this policy to other cities in the future.

OYO has previously received feedback from social groups, particularly in Meerut, urging the company to address this issue. Additionally, residents from other cities have also requested that OYO hotels prohibit check-ins for unmarried couples. OYO’s North India Regional Head, Pavas Sharma, stated that the company is committed to maintaining safe and responsible hospitality practices.

We respect individual freedom, but we also recognize our responsibility to listen to and work with law enforcement and civil society groups in these markets,” Sharma said. He added that the company will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically.

OYO has launched an initiative aimed at reshaping outdated perceptions and positioning itself as a trusted brand for families, students, business travelers, religious visitors, and solo explorers. The company emphasizes providing a safe and reliable experience for all types of guests.

This program is also designed to promote longer stays and encourage repeat bookings, strengthening customer trust and loyalty.

As part of its efforts, OYO has introduced nationwide initiatives, including joint seminars with police and hotel partners on safe hospitality practices. Additionally, the company is blacklisting hotels allegedly involved in unethical activities and taking strict action against unauthorized properties misusing the OYO brand.
